Vid Playback Troubleshooting

Why Is My Vid Stream Black but the Audio Works?

If your vid plays audio but the video displays a black screen when streamed, the video codec used in the original file may not be compatible with ManyVids’ streaming platform.

A codec is used to compress and decompress video and audio data. Different codecs can affect whether a video plays correctly on different platforms and devices.

Fortunately, you can usually resolve this issue by converting your vid to a compatible codec. We recommend using VLC Media Player, which is free and available for both Windows and Mac.

Convert Your Vid Using VLC

First, install VLC Media Player from the official VLC website:

https://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Once installed, follow the instructions for your operating system below.

Windows

  1. Open VLC Media Player.

  2. Click Media in the top-left corner.

  3. Select Convert / Save.

  4. Add the original vid file you want to convert.

  5. Click Convert / Save at the bottom of the window.

  6. Under Profile, select H.264.

  7. Click Browse and choose where you want to save the converted file.

  8. Enter a name for the new file and click Save.

  9. Click Start to begin the conversion.

  10. Wait for the conversion to finish.

Mac

  1. Open VLC Media Player.

  2. Click File in the top-left corner.

  3. Select Convert / Stream.

  4. Open the original vid file.

  5. Under Choose Profile, click Customize.

  6. Select the Video codec tab.

  7. From the Codec drop-down menu, select H.264.

  8. Click Apply.

  9. Select Save as File.

  10. Click Browse and choose where you want to save the converted file.

  11. Wait for the conversion to finish.

Replace Your Vid on ManyVids

Once the conversion is complete, upload the converted file by replacing the existing vid on ManyVids.

For instructions on replacing an existing vid, see How to Edit and Manage Your Vids.

Tip: Keep a copy of your original file before replacing it. Replacing a vid overrides the existing file.
